Checking the teeth for decay with an explorer works well for discovering surface tooth decay. The DIAGNOdent uses laser fluorescence to aid in the detection of decay within the tooth structure. As it is used, carious tooth structure will exhibit fluorescence and scale readings on the display will indicate the degree of the caries. Clean healthy tooth structure exhibits little or no fluorescence and will result in very low scale readings on the display.
